This summer, Jewell County was full of spirit as 23 young girls, ages 4 to 12, participated in a six-week cheerleading camp made possible through the support of Jewell County Strong Inc., the Jewell County Community Foundation, and the Nex-Generation Student Internship Program.
Led by a hometown cheerleader turned college athlete, Bella Volker, the camp provided a meaningful opportunity for local youth to learn new skills, build confidence, and have fun. “After four years of cheerleading—including three with the local Grizzlies and now cheering at McPherson College for the Bulldogs—I’ve always known that one day, I wanted to return to Jewell County and give back by coaching cheer,” said Bella. “This summer, I was honored to turn that dream into a reality.”
Held weekly on Tuesdays at the Jewell County Strong Community Wellness Center in Mankato, the camp was divided into age groups. Each group learned both a cheer and a dance routine to perform at the annual Threshing Bee. The oldest group, girls ages 10–12, even got the chance to select their own music and stunts for their final performance—a challenge they embraced with creativity and confidence.
In addition to performance routines, the campers developed fundamental cheer skills, including jump technique, motion placement, and basic stunting. The experience not only built physical ability, but also teamwork and self-assurance.
“It has been a joy to return to my roots and share my passion with the next generation of cheerleaders,” said Bella. “I’m incredibly grateful for the opportunity and the enthusiastic participation from each camper. Jewell County’s future in cheer is looking bright!”
Jewell County Strong Inc. and its funding partners continue to invest in opportunities like this to support youth development, community pride, and local leadership.
