FACILITY DETAILS
191 N. Locust Street
Mankato, KS 66956
The Building:
The 100’x50’ steel building will feature a 3000 square foot open exercise room, two classrooms, an exercise pool room, 4 bathrooms/dressing rooms, an office, a mechanical room, lockers, and a public laundry. The land for the wellness center borders an existing walking trail on an abandoned railroad track, which can be incorporated into personal fitness routines. The land has plenty of space for future expansion and for outdoor fitness activities. Construction of the fitness is tentatively planned to begin in the fall of 2023.
Open exercise room:
The open exercise room will contain a walking track around the perimeter of the room and inside the track will be space for cardio equipment and weight training equipment. The indoor walking track will provide a safe year-round space for people to get their steps in every day. We plan to purchase up to 48 pieces of commercial quality cardio and strength training equipment. Certified personal trainers will provide initial instruction to new members of our wellness center with the option of continuing personal training services.
Classrooms:
We envision hosting daily classes at our wellness center, including a variety of health education and fitness classes. We look forward to providing classes designed specifically for our county's senior citizens to strengthen their bodies and minds. We also want to explore offering dance classes for youth as well as many other fun fitness options!

Rehabilitation/exercise indoor pool:
We plan to work closely with the Jewell County Hospital Rehab Department to offer aquatic therapy for their patients. Currently, there is no indoor rehabilitation pool in Jewell County, and patients that need aquatic therapy must travel more than 30 miles to nearby towns. Pool access will be separate from regular membership and use will be scheduled to accommodate therapy schedules.
Public laundry:
A public laundry facility will be in the wellness center building and will have a separate exterior entrance. At the present time, there is no public laundry facility located in Jewell County. This laundry facility will satisfy a need in our community and assist our project in sustainability in the future.
RESEARCH IS BACKING US UP
It was highlighted through the Jewell County Community Health & Wellness Assessment 2021 that there is a need for a fitness center and access to health classes. Results from the survey indicated that 57% of residents ranked health education classes as the highest priority want/need in the public health sector. In the worksites sector, the top 3 priority wants/needs were employee wellness program (55%), access to exercise facilities (54%), and health education classes (53%); and in the community environment sector, the top priority was access to exercise facilities & gyms (54%).
