In the heart of rural Kansas, Jewell County faced a challenge familiar to many small
communities: declining population, limited resources, and a lack of access to essential health and wellness services. Yet, the residents of Jewell County were determined not to let these obstacles define their future. Instead, they came together with a shared vision of creating a space where everyone—from the youngest child to the most senior resident—could thrive physically, mentally, and socially. This is the story of the Jewell County Strong Community Wellness Center, a testament to community resilience, collaboration, and commitment.
The Spark of an Idea
The journey began in 2021, when the Jewell County Community Health
& Wellness Assessment highlighted a pressing need for a local exercise facility and health
education programs. Inspired by these findings, a group of dedicated residents formed Jewell County Strong Inc., a nonprofit organization with a mission to enhance the quality of life for all citizens and to combat community decline.
Turning Vision into Reality.
With a clear goal in mind, Jewell County Strong Inc. embarked on
an ambitious project to build a state-of-the-art wellness center. They applied for and received a series of grants, including a crucial $30,000 grant from the Dane G. Hansen Foundation for the purchase and installation of plumbing and HVAC systems. These funds, along with generous donations, were instrumental in moving the project forward and opening as scheduled.
The Power of Community.
One of the most remarkable aspects of this project was the sheer
amount of community involvement. Over 1,800 volunteer hours were logged as residents came together to lend their skills and labor. From construction and painting to fundraising and promoting the center, volunteers played a critical role at every stage of the project. Skilled tradespeople offered their expertise, while others organized events to raise additional funds and awareness.
A Dream Realized
In May 2024, the Jewell County Strong Community Wellness Center officially opened its doors. The facility features modern fitness equipment, an indoor rubber
track, and versatile spaces for health education classes and community events. The center's
opening was met with great enthusiasm, with 252 members signing up prior to mid-June.
More Than Just a Gym. The wellness center is quickly becoming more than just a place to
exercise; it is becoming a cornerstone of the community. Health education classes provide
valuable knowledge on nutrition, fitness, and mental health. Programs for youth promote
physical fitness and teamwork, while senior activities offer low-impact exercise and social
opportunities. The center also incorporated state-of-the-art security systems, ensuring a safe environment for all users.
Looking Ahead
The story of the Jewell County Strong Community Wellness Center is far from
over. Plans are already underway to add a rehabilitation pool and public laundry, further
expanding the center's offerings and impact. As the center grows and evolves, it will continue to serve as a vital resource for the community, promoting health, wellness, and connection for years to come.
